Adobe Creative Cloud is a set of applications and services from Adobe Inc. This package gives subscribers access to a collection of software ranging from graphic design to video editing, to web development, along with some optional cloud services. CPU – Single-Thread or Multi-Thread?

Different software makes use of the CPU in different ways. To elaborate, certain software has tasks that use multiple cores, but other programs only really use 1 or 2 cores. 

Frequency is often conflated with this kind of performance, but this is not always the case. IPC (Instructions per Clock) is another important factor, and benchmark comparisons are more important than comparing GHz.

This makes it important to have the latest generation processor and platform in your system. Each new generation of processor will have increased single-threaded performance over the previous.

The benchmarks above show how CPU performance can very between generations and platforms. 

A Threadripper is better for multi-threaded tasks, but is outperformed by a much more affordable Ryzen 7 in single-threaded processes. 

A previous generation i9 costs more than the Ryzen 7 and even has a higher boost frequency (5.0GHz vs 4.7GHz) but is outperformed in both areas.

CPU – Single Thread

The software included in Creative Cloud responds very well to single core CPU power. In programs like Photoshop and Illustrator, this is the main factor of consideration, but video editing programs in Adobe CC will require more cores. 

CPU – Core Count

Generally the Adobe Creative Cloud applications scale well up to about 16 CPU cores. There are certain highly-threaded workloads that can benefit from more than 16 cores but ultimately the price increase for a marginal increase in performance is not worth it.

For your Adobe CC computer, we’d recommend a Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 CPU, depending on your budget. These CPUs are fast, and they also feature a high core count.

You also still have the option of adding in some HDDs if you need to store projects and media you are not actively working on. We would recommend adding these in at a later stage so you can prioritize parts like the CPU. 

GPU

In an Adobe CC computer, the card we’d recommend depends on the particular software you plan on using.

For programs like Photoshop and Illustrator, the GPU is used most when processing RAW images and when zooming and panning around. Tasks like these don’t require a huge amount of power, and there’s a point of diminishing returns. A good mid-range GPU will give you all the power you need without overspending. 

The video production programs on the other hand can certainly benefit from a more powerful card. The RTX 3060 is our general recommendation for most budgets, but an RTX 3080 would be an excellent choice if you are willing to spend a bit more.

RAM

Adobe recommends at least 16GB RAM for Creative Cloud, and 32GB if you are working with 4K media. This is great as a starting point, but larger projects can use even more RAM. For that reason, we would recommend opting for 64GB if it is within your budget. This will allow for optimal performance and make the computer a lot more futureproof.

Storage

Storage technology has come a long way over the past decade. Solid State Drives are known to be much faster than mechanical hard drives, but they’re also seen as pretty expensive.

Adobe Creative Cloud can be quite demanding on your storage as it needs to constantly load and save media and projects while you work on them so we would say that a SSD is a no-brainer.

Recently it’s become more viable to just use a larger SSD, from around 500GB to 1TB, and this is exactly our approach with our PCs. Having everything stored on SSDs means you’ll be able to save and load programs, and also transfer data, at incredible speeds. The SSDs we use are M.2 form factor and use the NVMe protocol, which means they take up no additional space in your case, and are much faster than standard 2.5” SATA SSDs.
